We’ve been here before, haven’t we?

'Katy and Nick' is a collaborative project of mutual exchange, exploring the FXs of uncertain futures on relationship dynamics and human behaviour.

Using free associative writing processes, Katy and Nick make use of analogue (‘real’) electronic (‘synthetic’) sounds which are both nostalgic (specific 80’s FX) and unsettling. Heavy dependancy on echo and reverb across off kilter vocal tracks imitate simultaneous feelings of comfort and sudden shock. Sonically and lyrically Katy and Nick explore the limits of what can be tangibly translated from the subconscious.

The music on What I Did For You is as much influenced by the Object Relations theorist D. W. Winnicott as it is by other musicians (think Pete Shelley’s Homosapien, early Soft Cell, CTI’s Elemental, Bowie’s Low, This Mortal Coil, Chris and Cosey’s track Dancing On Your Grave as well as some sort of long forgotten nursery rhymes). Songs like That Man Is Back and Until Then oscillate between nightmarish terror and playful hooks, forcing space for the suggestion that there might be another way after all.

Side 2 is wholly comprised of song suite Sky is a Flat Panel and owes it's sprawling, abstract shape to the YouTube rushes of an unfinished biopic about Pyschotherapist Alfred Bion (A Memoir Of The Future) as well as an absurd and fragmented TV clip about the life and death of Renee Vivian, look ‘em up!

Katy and Nick are Katy Cotterell (Es, Public Service, Bitchin' Car) and Nick Carlisle (Peepholes, Bamboo).
