It’s Wiggle Wiggle Time! Gob Nation’s latest release is Scared to Update: the debut album by Aussie/LDN boys Keno. Imagine Devo or Uranium Club wrote some big arse caveman stompers for the pit. Yes, primitive riffs are on the menu, but don’t go thinking these guys are thickos: throughout the 8 tracks of Scared to Update, Dom (Guitar/Vox, also of Casing, Yaws, Union Carbide) takes a wry look at displacement, LDN dystopia, obsolescence and the uncanniness of our digital world without ever sacrificing a sense of fun. Beamed into your skull via a pleasing monotonal bark, images of ‘human paste’ and ‘psychotic mould’ collide with ‘interest rates’, and ‘breakfast in a suit’, ‘wiggle wiggle time’ is declared, and ‘destroying your life for fun’ starts to seem like a sensible 5 year plan. The album title also captures something of this dichotomy: Dom explains that “Scared to Update” came from “being scared to update my Mac IOS” or, in broader terms: being stuck between states yet knowing that “the upgrade is inevitable.”

You can hear this tension in the tunes too: big ALL CAPS riffs rubbing up against freaky mutant organ lines and everything occasionally collapsing into weirdo synth noise textures. But these experimentations are never indulged or taken for granted: a tune like Excite/Unwind will pummel on persistently, pause briefly to disintegrate, then, through a mist of sound effects, another maniacal stomper like Which World will appear to kick you up the arse before you’ve had time to get all Cafe Oto about it. Much of the album’s relentlessness is provided by Alec (Drums/Vox- also of Casing, Skitter, Maladia) and Reid (Bass- also of NIX, Rancour, Glib) who specialise in a mid-tempo repetitive groove which somehow feels harder and more unforgiving than any faster or more dynamic hardcore band.

Scared to Update is the band’s first proper studio effort, and was recorded with Matt Green (Sniffany & The Nits, The Tubs) in his Headcold Recordings studio in South London.
